Vampire: The Masquerade is a successful role-playing franchise by White Wolf based on our world where creatures such as vampires, werewolves, demons, and others, all exist and manipulate history from behind the scenes. Bloodlines is the second video game adaptation of the series. It follows the adventures of a newly turned vampire in Los Angeles as they struggle to adapt to their new life amidst the underworld. Their maker is executed but a stay of execution is granted for the player so long as they serve the LA prince.
Games like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines combine action and roleplaying as the player’s character grows in skill, using experience points to improve attributes and abilities. Combat takes place in first and third person, depending on the weapons or abilities used. Like most RPGs, it offers a variety of side missions in addition to the main story, letting players determine the pace at which they want to work through the game.
A player’s clan choice affects the type of character they make with different clans suited for different playstyles. Brujahs suit players who prefer physical combat, while Malkavians and Toreadors are better for those who wish for more dialogue options. Each clan also has specific Disciplines that can be used to aid quests.
Players must also take both their Humanity and the Masquerade into account. Killing innocents increases the player’s aggression and should they lose enough Humanity points they end up as a mindless beast, losing the game. Similarly, if players use their powers in front of witnesses or reveal the existence of the supernatural, they lose Masquerade points. Repeated violation of this will result in their death by vampire hunters.
