An immersive psychological thriller, Prey is a science fiction third person shooter. The player controls Morgan Yu as they explore the Talos 1 space station while fighting an alien species known as the Typhon.
The game takes place in an alternate history where JFK survived his assassination attempt and went on to accelerate the Space Race. Encountering alien life, the USA and Soviet Union cooperate to study the captive lifeforms in orbit.
Prey is set in an open world environment. Though designed primarily as a survival horror game, it features elements from roleplaying and stealth games. The player is able to alter some of Morgan’s attributes, such as what gender they are. The story and ending is affected by choices the player makes during the game.
The open world design is a departure from most survival horror games. The player will return to different parts of the station at times as well as being able to spacewalk and discover shortcuts throughout. The station has numerous sealed doors that are not necessary to the main story but offer optional side missions. The player pieces together the holes in the story by recovering journals and records from the dead crew.
To survive, Morgan must make use of crafting, using the blueprints, gadgets, and tools aboard the station to help him. Morgan will also gain access to alien powers and other unique skills as the game progresses. Experimenting with different combinations of powers and weapons is the key to success.
The game walks a fine line between action and horror. Ammunition for weapons is readily available but the player must be careful about needless expenditure. The game is designed to encourage scavenging and intelligent use of resources.
A tribute to System Shock and similar games, Prey is a standout hit and a must play for any serious gamer. If you are looking for more games like Prey, check the list below.
