Games like Homeworld are special. It’s not every game that gets a remastered version sixteen years after its release. Its 3d graphics and atmospheric soundtrack made the game an instant hit. Much praise has been lavished on its cinematic and gripping storyline. Homeworld is a cult classic in the science fiction genre, one whose appeal has remained long after its rivals.
In this game you play as the Kushan, inhabitants of the desert planet Kharak. The discovery of a spaceship buried in the sands and the revelation that the Kushan originated from another planet named ‘Hiigara’; unifies the clans who work together to build a giant mothership capable of carrying over half a million colonists.
The game opens with the testing of the mothership’s hyperspace drive, only to bring the Kushan into conflict with an aggressive alien fleet. Returning home, they find Kharak razed to the ground as the Kushan development of a hyperspace drive is in violation of a forgotten 4,000 years old treaty between the Kushan exiles and the Taiidan Empire. The 600,000 colonists aboard the mothership are the only ones left.
The survivors must begin their long journey to reclaim their ancestral homeworld while encountering an eclectic mixture of rebels, mercenaries, traders, and pirates along the way.
Homeworld is a game for any fan of real-time strategy. In each level the player will gather resources, build a fleet, and use it to combat the enemy vessels and accomplish their objectives. Careful planning is needed as the player’s fleet carries over between levels. Central to each level is your mothership which acts as your base. Lose it and you lose the game.
